Each nook and cranny of the Earth is a worthwhile place to visit. But life is short, and money is hard to come by, so you might want to see the most amazing places first.
Here are our top four!
Santorini is the largest island of a small archipelago in the Aegean sea. The island is what remains of a large single island after a violent volcanic eruption years ago. From all that tumult and violence, you now have a beautiful and serene landscape that is complemented by pristine beaches, white hillside houses and a quiet elegance about it. Everywhere you look in Santorini is a testament to its beauty and underneath it all is pulsing, wild fun.
Machu Picchu, Peru
If you have been watching those Indiana Jones movies, you might think of Machu Picchu as a dingy, dry and hot place. It is not. Machu Picchu is more than 2,400 meters above sea level and is surrounded by a tropical forest. The whole place is set amidst exceedingly beautiful surroundings. Machu Picchu is one amazing remnant of the Inca Empire.
There is no better way to describe Iceland than as an island of extremes. You could find some of the biggest glaciers in continental Europe here as well as hot volcanic springs. And, of course, there are many great ice structures that you can visit. You could come here at different times of the year and be awed by the splendid shows being put on by Mother Nature itself.
Imagine a city carved into the rocks. Not with modern tools, but by tools that were available at least two millennia ago. The historic city is a world wonder that was re-introduced to the world in 1812.
